The Mexican actor and director Diego Luna has presented his second fictional feature César Chávez in the Pearls section. The film tells the story of the labour leader and civil- rights activist who fought for the rights of farm workers.
Luna got the idea for the film after starting to spend a lot of time in Los Angeles in California, a state full of emigrants who even today are working in really tough conditions. He adds that in both the United States and in Latin America people know very little about Chávez or his movement. “It’s a story that not everyone wants to hear, because even today there are a lot of questions that need to be asked about the reality of farm work in the USA. There are millions of workers who are still not recognized and do not enjoy the rights that other citizens have. It’s a new kind of slavery that keeps a world economy going.”
