The Salt of the Earth is a documentary portrait of the great Brazilian photographer, Sebastião Salgado by his son Juliano and Wim Wenders. Juliano and Wenders both agreed that the stories that Salgado told them about his travels were so powerful that they made ideal material for a film that would combine his experiences, his stories and his photographs. Juliano stressed how his father’s experience of the genocide in Ruanda in the 1990s had an utterly devastating effect on him: until then his work had been very journalistic; afterwards it became more artistic. “It is as if he had lost faith in humanity in Ruanda and then had recovered it. In a barbaric, violent world, it is also possible to do positive things; we can make the world a better place”.
