Introduced by the Mexican actor and director Diego Luna as, “someone who understands that risk is an essential tool for an actor” Hugh Jackman received this year’s second Donostia Award shortly before the end of the 61st Film Festival yesterday at the Kursaal.
The Australian actor joked that, “they say that to see San Sebastián is to fall in love. So now I’m having an affair.” He recalled that his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, had won the Silver Shell here for best actress back in 1991 for her role in Waiting and since then he had heard her talking about its people, its food and beaches. He had warm words for some of the directors (including Woody Allen, Darren Aronofsky and Cristopher Nolan) and colleagues who had helped him throughout his career, modestly reminding the audience that, “you’re only as good as the people you work with”. He also said he felt humbled when he saw all the great figures who had preceded him in receiving the award.
He closed by especially thanking his colleagues on Prisoners, the film that was to be screened just after the ceremony, and said that hopefully he would go on and entertain his audience for many more years, and stressed that “I will never forget the Donostia Award or the generosity of everyone here at San Sebastián tonight.”
