The Bosnian filmmaker Jamina Žbanic, who won the Golden Bear in Berlin seven years ago with her first film Grbavica, is currently competing in the Official Section with her third film For those who can tell no tales, which is set against the disturbing legacy of the war in Bosnia.
At a lively press conference yesterday she revealed that, “I was looking for a story that would enable me to reflect on what we are twenty years after the war. Someone spoke to me about the performance that Kym Vercoe had staged first in her native Australia and then in Bosnia about the emotional conflict she went through after visiting Višegrad and spending the night in the Vilina Vlas hotel, that in the early 1990s was a detention centre where hundreds of Muslim women were raped, tortured and murdered. I spoke to her and we decided to tackle her own story by making a kind of fictional film against a documentary backdrop”.
