Spanish director David Trueba’s latest film, Vivir es facil con los ojos cerrados, screened yesterday in the Official section, tells the story of an English teacher who at the height of Franco’s regime used Beatlessongs to teach English. Hearing that John Lennon is shooting a film in Almeria, he decides to go and meet him. The director acknowledged how each generation needs figures who provide an inspiration when it comes to rebelling against authority and facing up to your own complexes. “In this sense the mere presence of someone like John Lennon in the repressive Spain of that time was a kind of revolution for many people.”
The character who inspired the film actually existed, and although he is now in his eighties, is still teaching English in Cartagena. Javier Cámara, who plays him in the film, got to meet him and confesses that he was astonished by his, “idealism and stubbornness in teaching kids a language, that apart from being useful, also helped to make them feel important and free and really inspired them.”
