Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
European film distributors discussed the threats and opportunities of the digital universe at the Europa Distribution panel discussion in San Sebastian on Tuesday.
Jaume Ripoll of Filmin said that the decline in the audience for indie films was due to a lack of interest in the pictures, and the viewers’ crowded lives leaving little time for moviegoing. The challenge was to inject some excitement into filmgoing. He suggested that the film biz should try to replicate the approach of the indie music biz, and make filmgoing cool.
One example of this approach was the Atlantida Film Festival, which is based on the model of a live-music festival.
Tom Abell of Peccadillo Pictures in the U.K. explained that indie distribs had to battle to persuade digital giants, like Amazon and YouTube, to remove illegal copies of their films from their sites.
Laurence Gornall of The Works in the U.K. explained how U.S. company Magnolia’s day and date release of films in theatres and VOD would not work in Europe due to market and geographical differences. Magnolia was looking to sell only theatrical rights to films, and retain worldwide VOD rights, which was not an attractive proposition for European distributors.
