The actress Nora von Waldstätten acknowledged at the press conference after the screening of October/ November that “staging a film within a film is something that is really unusual and complicated.” Her character leads an apparently glamorous existence but inside she’s shattered. She’s like an island without any friends; with nowhere to take shelter,” she explained.
Throughout the entire film, director Götz Spielmann bears very much in mind the element of death and the bonds between the two sisters, and he represents this through the metaphor of a dying fish squirming on a rock. “I think that these images form part of a world of feelings that make us feel very small. It’s an image that is full of associations that came to mind constantly while I was writing the script,” he said.
The Austrian director prolongs the father’s death for twenty minutes for a deliberate purpose. He admitted that it really bothered him that they banalised how people die on film. “Death is a really important experience and it is also a huge secret: it’s a fundamental event in our lives. Death shouldn’t be trivialized in films or reduced to an idea that you play with,” he stated.
