In the first few stills of Pelo malo, which was screened yesterday in the Official section, the main character and his friend play at imagining what is going on in the neighbours’ flats in the building opposite them, just like in Dans la maison, the film that won the Golden Shell last year. However the middle-class houses that François Ozon filmed have nothing at all to do with the cramped flats that Junior watches. The aggressiveness that pervades Caracas fuels the tense disturbing atmosphere in Mariana Rondón’s film that subtly deals with “intolerance in a highly dogmatic social context, where what is different is not accepted.
Micaela Cajahuaringa’s photography adds to the sense of unease, as does the soundtrack that, according to producer Marité Ugás, “tries to seep into the viewer’s subconscious all the time.”
