According to director Jose Luis Valle both stories in his first film Workers actually took place. “Rafael’s story happened to a friend of my parents who worked for a US multinational, while the story of a millionairess who left her inheritance to a dog occurred in Germany. Although both cases seem to be genuinely Mexican, in actual fact they happened in the first world,” Valle points out. The action in Workers takes place in Tijuana and is deliberately structured in two stories that appear to be mutually exclusive, but which have clear points in common. The director is quite clear about the fact that, “this might not be the real Tijuana but it is Tijuana as I experience it. Of course there is drug trafficking and violence but it’s a bit simplistic to think that there is nothing else to Tijuana.”
Before being shown here in San Sebastián the film had already been screened at the Berlinale, in Brasilia, and had won the Award for best Mexican feature at the Guadalajara Film Festival.
