How can you cope with a burden like that? How can you come to terms with the fact that the brother who you are looking after has to be your defendant as he’s accused of a serious crime? The questions that the film De menor asks were expressed with this level of precision at the discussion that followed the presentation of the film. Its director, Caru Alves de Souza, explores the answers throughout this story, which is her first full-length film, although she has made several TV documentaries and a couple of short films. It took part in Films in Progress in 2012 and 2013 and has been produced by the director and Tata Amaral, who she founded Tangarina Entretenimiento with.
What underlies the film, which is based on a true story, is the current debate that is raging in Brazil on reducing the age of majority for serious crimes. Brazilian society is divided between supporters of minors’ human rights and those who are committed to punishing youngsters even more severelyin such a violent society.
