Jia Zhangke, considered to be one of the great masters of contemporary cinema is once again back at San Sebastian with A Touch of Sin, which won the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes, after having presented 24 City in Zabaltegi five years ago.
Through the stories of four different characters in four different provinces linked by a subtle thread, the filmmaker and scriptwriter has reflected his concern for the rise in the number of acts of violence in China, with the aim of also getting the audience to think about, “why these people have gone to the extreme of using violence, and what passes through the minds of people in desperate circumstances that leads them to use violence as a way out of a situation.”
