Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Asked about the current boom in Mexican cinema, the producer of Club Sandwich, Cristian Valdelièvre, replied at the press conference given yesterday after the screening of the film that, “Mexican cinema is going through its most important period in fifty years, not just because of the amount of films that are being made but also for their quality. There isn’t a festival worth its salt that doesn’t accept three or four films from our country.” Director Fernando Eimbcke once again shows the typical conflicts of adolescence, just as he did in his first two films: “in this case, however, I think that the adults are more important that in my previous films; while I was preparing the script I realized that the strongest character was the mother and I let myself be guided by this.”
The film portrays the tense relations between a mother and a son who are spending their holidays at a resort in Oaxaca, when the teenager meets a girl of his own age and starts to undergo his first pangs of sexual desire while his mother experiences this as he start of her offspring’s emancipation. Apart from the similar themes that the film shares with his previous work, Fernando Eimbcke also continues to cultivate his own distinctive brand of expressive minimalism.
