Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Paul Julian Smith, Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York and one of the leading authorities on Spanish and Latin American cinema in the Englishspeaking world, is delighted to be currently forming part of the Horizontes Latinos Jury, and feels that the selection of films in the Horizontes section provides an excellent reflection of the variety and quality of contemporary Latin American cinema.
He’s convinced that the future of cinema passes through Latin America although films from the continent still need to be screened more widely. He says that usually more parochial films that go down really well with a national audience are rarely seen outside their respective countries, while on the other hand the Spanish and Latin American films that are most successful internationally rarely have any success in their own market as they tend to be art- ouse cinema.
He also laments that the extremely marked cultural differences between Spain and Latin America are what prevents a greater degree of exchange between both regions.
