Carmen Maura became the first Spanish actress to receive a Donostia Award when she was presented with the statuette by Álex De la Iglesia last night at the Kursaal. “I accept this in the hope that this award will open up the way for many other Spanish actresses to win it in the future,” she said. De la Iglesia, who directed Maura in her latest film, Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi, which was screened after the ceremony, described her as someone who reflected and defined the very best of Spanish cinema, and that we still hadn’t seen the best of her: the Carmen of the future.
Clearly thrilled by the occasion, Carmen Maura said that she wanted to share the award with her parents and her children who had suffered the consequences of her desire to be actress. She confessed that she was extremely proud to be the first Spanish actress to win the award and recalled among the many happy moments in her career how during her first few visits to the Festival she stayed in packed hotel rooms in the Maria Cristina and went round the city putting up posters of her films herself. She closed by announcing the screening of her latest film and hoped that the audience would enjoy it.
