Miniscule- Valley of the lost ants has been one of the great sensations at the Festival among both children and adults, and one of the first things that really strikes you about the film is its extraordinary technical quality that combines real-life backgrounds with 3D animation.
Philippe Delarue, its producer, explained that one of the big problems they had with the real-life backgrounds was that real insects sneaked onto the stills. As they didn’t match up with the cartoon ants and were protected species they had to be removed digitally in the post-production phase.
The film has already been sold to forty countries, favoured by the fact that it has no dialogue, and Delarue stressed that this shows that it’s perfectly possible to offer top-quality animation with a lower budget than in typical Hollywood productions.
Although nowadays it’s obvious that animated films have long gone beyond being mere entertainment for children, it’s no less true that children won’t just accept anything they are offered anymore. Proof of this is the excellent reception that such a sophisticated film as Miniscule has had among youngsters here in San Sebastián.
