Diego Quemada-Diez recalled that he first got the idea for his film La Jaula de Oro in 2003 and started shooting in 2007. During all this time, among other things, he was interviewing hundreds of youngsters to fill the four main roles of teenagers who flee Guatemala to seek a better life in the USA. To make the film as realistic as possible he made the trip himself with his actors without them knowing the details of the story or what was going to happen to them.
He said that he didn’t just want to attract attention to the thousands of emigrants who make the trip north; what he also wanted was to tell the story of the transformation in a child who believes in a materialist dream and along the way thanks to a native Indian companion, learns a lot of other things. He spoke of the shattered dreams of the youngsters of the South and stressed how behind the phenomenon of migration there was the problem of conquests and colonization processes that was still highly present all throughout the Americas.
