Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
VIDA EN SOMBRAS
The film shows the vital relationship between its protagonist, Carlos Durán, and cinema: from the moment of his birth in a fairground attraction where they screened films by the Lumière brothers, to his work as a reporter and finally as a director. Despite the fact that the Civil War affected his family life, and despite the setbacks, cinema remained his reason to be.
The film suffered several commercial and administrative setbacks which delayed its premiere until 1953, also leading to the loss of its negatives and copies in 35mm. The appearance in 2007 of a new 16mm copy offering improved photographic quality prompted yet another restoration, this time aided by digital technology and its possibilities. This later work substantially improved the earlier analogue restoration carried out in 1983 by the Filmoteca Española.
This restoration, obtained from the only 16mm copies that still exist, is the result of collaboration between the Filmoteca Española, the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Deluxe Barcelona laboratory, with the complicity and support of Antònia y Beatriu Llobet and Núria Tresserra.
LLORENÇ LLOBET-GRÀCIA
(1911-1976)
Biography
In late 1947, Llorenç Llobet-Gràcia began shooting what was to be his only professional work. He had a great deal of experience in amateur film, being one of its most prestigious filmmakers, and he never even considered a career as the director of commercial cinema. His commitment to film led him to use different means to exactly portray a story that he cared about and concerned him. It is precisely that militant, committed attitude that makes Vida en sombras so different to films from its same time and cultural environment.
