Isabella and her brother Alfonso live happily in Arévalo with her mother Isabella of Portugal, widow of King John II of Castile. But one sorry day they?re taken by force to the Segovian court on orders from their uncle, King Henry IV, due to the pregnancy of his wife, Joan of Portugal. A particularly wanted baby after years of being unable to conceive a descendant, sparking rumours of the King?s impotence. Isabella and Alfonso are left in care of the Queen, who despises and fears them as a threat to the future of the daughter she is expecting.
