Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The director Mathieu Demy presented Americano yesterday at the Festival accompanied by actors Carlos Bardem and Geraldine Chaplin. His film tells the story of Martin, played by the director himself, who goes back to the city of his childhood to deal with the formalities surrounding his inheritance after his mother’s death, but to do this he finds he has to come to terms with his past.
The use of old footage of his own childhood in LA shot by his mother, Agnès Varda, also enriches his debut film. According to the filmmaker, “This is a film about the strength of the bond that links parents and their children. Rather than a story about grief, “it’s the story of someone who refuses to mourn,” the director explained at the press conference he gave after the screening of his film.
As for the difficult task of directing a film you are starring in, Demy pointed out that this merely required being more organised. In this respect, Geraldine Chaplin acknowledged that she had learnt a great deal with Demy,“because he’s an excellent actor and an excellent director of actors.”
