Julia Murat, the director of Historias que só existem quando lembradas, which is competing for the Horizontes Award, said that she wanted to deal with a wide variety of issues in her film, ranging from intergenerational relationships to the individual’s role in society or in a specific place.
This is the Brazilian director’s first feature and is set in a fictitious ghost town in the interior of Brazil. She got the idea for the film back in 1999 when she discovered a town whose cemetery was closed and she decided to write a story about a woman who wanted to die but found that the cemetery was no longer open. Five years later she started to work on the script for the project, and after travelling around the Vale do Paraiba for three months she had gathered enough material to make her first documentary Dia dos país and prepare the script for Historias.
