Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Chilean director,Alejandro Fernandez Almendras, is here at the Festival to present his latest film Sentados frente al fuego, which is being screened in the Zabaltegi section. It tells the story of a man whose wife is slowly dying, and the director based it on a true story that he heard from a peasant during the research he carried out before shooting Huacho, his first feature, when he spent quite a long time in the countryside where his parents used to live. The old man looked incredibly tough but burst into tears when he spoke about his late wife who had recently passed away. This led him to imagine the story of the last months of the woman’s life and her husband’s attempts to fight death. The film took its title from a poem by Jorge Tellier in which an old couple sit beside a fire and remember their past as they see each other’s shadows dancing on the walls. Next year he plans to shoot another film, which will be quite different to his previous two as it’s going to be a crime film.
