“A defeat is never neutral or undeserved; we need to avoid losers like the plague.”This is what the alcoholic sceptical teacher says in Pa Negre (Black Bread), the second Catalan film to be screened in the Official Section this year. The action is set in a village deep in the mountains just after the Spanish Civil War where lies, vengeance and hatred are “weaving a spider’s web around the characters.” Director Agustí Villaronga has subtitled his film “Portrait of a bird killer” and birds represent ideals: “you fly so low that it looks like you’re walking” one of the characters in the film says.
What this film has in common with the Catalan director’s previous work is that “the burden of the past is omnipresent.” This is a choral film in which,“all the characters have a dual side and all of them are disturbed.”
