Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
The Dutch film Schemer was screened in the Zabaltegi section yesterday. It’s based on a true story about a group of teenagers who commit a senseless murder and its director Hanro Smirtsman explained that the fact that the murder has no apparent motive makes it more difficult for the audience to reach a verdict. He was intrigued to see if it
went down well with an international audience. “It’s a very Dutch story and I was interested in seeing whether the problems it raises can be considered to be universal questions.”
The French film La Tête ailleurs is also taking part in the New Directors section. Although
he has already made several shorts, this is the first feature directed by Frédéric Pelle and is based on the novel Voyage, Voyages by Laurent Graff who also helped to adapt the script.
It is about a lonely character whose preparations for a trip to an unknown destination last a lifetime.
The most exciting thing about the story according to the director is the character’s honesty. Although many people will consider him to be a loser, he insists that his character is happy and that his life merely reflects what many of us do: dreaming of what we want to be without ever quite managing to fulfil our dreams.
