Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Bahman Ghobadi, has twice won the Golden Shell here at San Sebastián and he is back at the Festival with his latest film No one know about Persian cats, which is about the underground musical scene in Teheran. He wanted to use these bands as an excuse to show the oppressive regime that Iranian society is suffering under. “I’m bitter as a result of the experience of these last 30 years with this regime in Iran. Due to this opression I am depressed, sad and bitter, and I try to reflect these feelings in my films. Each of my films is like the seconds during which a torture victim manages to snatch a gasp of air before their head is pushed back under the water again”
“We artists are one step ahead of the rest of society and what I’ve tried to reflect is how these groups struggle to survive and keep going”. The film focuses on two musical bands but the director claims that the regime’s repressive activities extend to every sphere of the arts. “In the last 30 years we can say without exaggerating that millions of works of art, books, pictures, poetry, films and music are hidden away in houses out of fear, because they need promotion. And it is highly likely that they will be caught or get into trouble.”
