Terry Gilliam acknowledges that the tragedy of Heath Ledger’s death during the shooting of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus should have been the end of the project, but amazingly Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to finish it off. “It shouldn’t have worked out but it did, brilliantly”, he said. The three actors accepted to work as an act of love to Ledger, and gave their salaries to his daughter. Gilliam stressed how important it was that they were friends of Ledger’s, and he even changed the credits to make it a “film by Keith Ledger and friends”.
What he aimed to do was encourage people to expand their imagination, as most people live grey, boring lives, and he wanted a film that would get inside people’s heads and stay with them after they left the cinema “This is my version of the world not the version that Hollywood offers”.
