The screening of the Korean film I came from Busan by Jeon Soo-il,completed the roll call of candidates for the Golden Shell with a bitter portrait of modern Korean society. It stars Park Ha-seon, and has certain points in common with Antonioni’s La Notte, as just like in that film it takes a depressed, restless character as a starting point to build up a human and social portrait. According to the director, “we often see Koreans on television who have been adopted and taken abroad, who when they are adults, try to find their biological parents. And even so we don’t lift a finger when we hear how each year more than 2,000 children; mostly children of single mothers and minors, are taken abroad to be adopted.” I came from Busan also deals with the problems of the country, such as juvenile violence and unemployment.
