The Day God Walked Away tells the story of Jacqueline, a young Tutsi who works for a Belgian family that is evacuated during the early days of the genocide. After emerging from hiding, she discovers that her children have been brutally murdered.
Belgian director Philippe van Leeuw tells the Rwandan genocide in a more introspective way, focusing on the suffering of the survivors, the fear, and anguish, as opposed to the brutality with which other films have portrayed the conflict. "The theme of the film is more the question of survival in an extreme situation, rather than the genocide itself", says van Leeuw.

The role required a lot of physical and emotional energy”, says the first-time actress. The beauty of the images is set against the emotional brutality that the main characters are subjected to.
