Yo, también, the spanish film that is competing for the Golden Shell tells the story of Daniel, a young guy with Down syndrome who falls in love with a woman he meets at work. At a press conference after the screening of the film yesterday, Pablo Pineda, who plays the role of Daniel said in no uncertain terms that “people like us with Down syndrome have feelings and fall in love.”
The directors, Álvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro, had already worked with someone with Down syndrome on the short, Uno más, uno menos with Antonio’s sister, Lourdes Naharro in the leading role, and having broken the ice, the felt encouraged to go deeper into the subject. They got to know the contemporary dance company for the disabled, Danza Mobile, and then saw Pablo Pineda on television. They then prepared the first version of the script that they showed to Pablo. When they offered him the chance to work in the film he thought it was a crazy idea because he wasn’t an actor and had no idea what to do but in the end they convinced him and even his parents were infected by his enthusiasm”.
