Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
This is the first time that the British film and theatre director John Madden has been to San Sebastián. He’s delighted to be a member of the Official Jury, as the festival has a golden reputation not just for cinema but also as a place to visit. He stresses how important it is for the jury to see the films they are going to judge together so they can get to know each other’s sensibilities, and also as a director he feels it is vital to see films with an audience: movie-going can be a theatrical experience as you’re experiencing something at the same time as a lot of other people and this is very enjoyable, unlike the lonely experience of watching films on your I-pod.
He began working in theatre and radio before switching to cinema as although he grew up with films there was and still is a very strong theatrical tradition in his country. Many actors also share this extraordinary lineage and have later moved from stage to screen such as this year’s Donostia Award winner, Sir Ian McKellen, who he confesses he admires enormously.
He acknowledges that the current financial crisis has begun to affect the British film industry as it is more difficult to get funding, especially for nonmainstream films.
