“When I still had seventy pages to go in the novel I already had my full of cinema”, Fernando Trueba, the director of the film El Baile de la Victoria, claimed after his film had been screened yesterday in the Official Section. He found in Fernando Skármeta’s book a combination of humour, tragedy and political elements, marvellous characters and romanticism that really inspired him. He defined it as the “freest” fictional film he has made and said that it is full of optimism even though it contains elements of tragedy.
Trueba thought that it was all the better for not being shown in competition as in his opinion there was nothing less competitive than art.
