Screened yesterday at the Kursaal, Seasons in the Sun is Chinese director Zhang Huilin’s second film. It portrays the friendship between two friends that radically changes when Sugar comes into their lives. The director said that he thought women at that age were smarter than boys and could teach them a lot about friendship and love, as the latter are much more innocent.
According to the director the subject of teenagers and friendship is universal, but he had noticed that in the West boys express their feelings more openly, whereas Chinese are shyer.
Music is the other main focus of the story as one of the main characters sells pirated CDs at a market, and conversations revolve round Nirvana and you can see posters of Pink Floyd. The director acknowledges that, “music is very important in my life. It’s a form of rebellion and an outlet for young people”.
