One of the best known Asian stars in the world, the Chinese actress is once again back in San Sebastián, this time as chairwoman of the New Directors jury, which is a task she was delighted to take on.
She explains how she went to America when she was very young as her mother was living there at the time, and she had a longing for the unknown and the far away: “it was such a thrill to be able to go to the other side of the world".
From her time in the US she has especially fond memories of working with Bertolucci on The Last Emperor and David Lynch on Twin peaks, although she’s equally happy working in China: “it’s like going back home.” In any case, she says that,“Acting is probably the easiest job that anyone could get so wherever I am, I think I’m probably pretty at ease.” Having grown up during the Cultural Revolution she has little time for political correctness and stresses how it’ll be difficult to shoot in China as long as they have censorship there.
