VI INTERNATIONAL FILM SCHOOL MEETING

Once again in this, its sixth year, the International Film School Meeting will offer a hot-spot within the San Sebastian Festival at which to dynamically exchange all sorts of audiovisual experiences.

Madrid, Barcelona, Andoain, San Sebastian, Zaragoza and Valencia; France (París, Toulouse), Germany and Belgium; Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico… A total of 25 works, 17 centres, eight European and Latin American countries will be represented this year.

Youngsters with a particular interest in film technique and language have the chance to present a selection of their practice works at one of the most important international events of its kind.

And they can comment on these works at lively sessions open to the general public and Festival guests, attended by their teachers, who can also explain their centres’ pedagogical principles.

The Festival applies selection criteria placing this Meeting on a par with its other sections, giving it the same professional treatment at the Sales Office and the Video Library, both of which open their doors to the works proposed by the different schools.

A specific jury, consisting of students from the participating film schools and chaired this year by the Mexican moviemaker Alfonso Cuarón* (Y tu mamá también, Children of Men, Harry Potter III…), will present the winning director with the Panavision Award, carrying a complete camera package Sony Z1 HDV for four weeks of filming or a voucher worth €10,000 for renting any kind of Panavision material.

The jury will also decide the names of the three directors who will have the chance to participate with their works in the Short Film Corner at the next Cannes Festival.

“My main reason for accepting to participate as Chairman of the Jury in the VI International Film School Meeting is because I am enormously interested in learning from this new generation of filmmakers due to its being the first to have been born with the new formats making film production more accessible. These new formats have also brought a new eye, a new way of interpreting reality“, said Cuarón.

On Wednesday, September 26th, a live shoot workshop dedicated to digital filming will offer the chance to observe a passionate dialogue open to the public between Alfonso Cuarón and the top-notch Brazilian director of photography, Affonso Beato (Carne Trémula, La Reina, Dark Water, El amor en los tiempos de cólera…).

These are only some of the attractions of a VI International Film School Meeting offering further surprises during presentation of the selected works on September 26th and 27th, at the Sala de Actos de Kutxa (calle Andia s/n).

ALFONSO CUARÓN

Born in Mexico City in 1961. He made his debut in the film world as assistant director on several North American films shot in his country. He also worked as a director for Mexican TV before directing his first feature film, Sólo con tu pareja (Love in Time of Hysteria, 1991). This unusual comedy about AIDS was made with a budget of only half-a-million dollars, a factor which caught the attention of Hollywood. A Little Princess (1995), his second feature, marked his directorial debut in the USA. This film was a great hit when screened at San Sebastian Festival. He later made an adaptation of Dickens’ Great Expectations (1998) with a top-line cast.

Y tu mamá también (And Your Mother Too, 2001), starring Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna and Maribel Verdú, was screened at San Sebastian Festival in an Anoeta Velodrome packed to the hilt and attended by Cuarón himself, who thanked the audience for its enthusiasm. He was once again approached by the big studios to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and his last big success to date is the disturbing futuristic tale Children of Men (2006), screened last year as part of Zabaltegi-Pearls. He also directed one of the episodes of Paris, je t’aime (2006).

VI INTERNATIONAL FILM SCHOOL MEETING

The Jury of the VI International Film School Meeting, consisting of students from centres in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, France, Belgium and Spain, and chaired by the director Alfonso Cuarón, grants the PANAVISION Award to the film:

• “VITA DE GIACOMO” by Luca Governatori. La Femis. France.

The Award carries a complete camera package Sony Z1 HDV for four weeks of filming, or a voucher worth €10,000 for renting any kind of Panavision material, for the winning director.

The Jury also grants three special mentions with an invitation to participate in the SHORT FILM CORNER at the next Cannes Festival:

Congratulations to all of the participants in the VI International Film School Meeting.

We take our hats off to this initiative by San Sebastian Festival and its organisers.

This year, emphasizes its presence in this section by organising a live-shoot workshop dedicated to digital filming versus the traditional 35 mm negative.

Carried out in association with the AEC (the Spanish Association of Cinematographers), EPC camera rentals and Fotofilm-Deluxe in Madrid and Barcelona, this workshop will be given by two maestros from the world of film: the Mexican director Alfonso CUARON (Y tu mamá también, Children of Men, Harry Potter III…), Chairman of the VI Meeting Jury, and the Brazilian cinematographer Affonso BEATO (Carne Trémula, The Queen, Dark Water, Love in the Time of Cholera…).

This workshop will start at 11 a.m. on September 26th at the CICC – International Center for Contemporary Art – (Tabacalera Donostia).

During the event, the two men will discuss their work, the relationship created between the director and the camera operator, working with the Genesis digital camera, the influence of today’s technical changes, and answer participants’ questions.

This event serves to express our admiration for the talent of two fine creators, our confidence in the future of our cinema and our trust in the new generation of filmmakers from their first attempts.

We will also take pleasure this year in granting an award to the maker of the best film at the Meeting in the shape of a voucher for camera rental helping the winner to take his or her first steps in the movie world.

The International Film School Meetings are going from strength to strength at the San Sebastian International Film Festival as an occasion for the dynamic exchange of audiovisual experiences and learning.

One of the most typical features of the Meetings is the fact that they include a wide range of educational initiatives from European and Latin American countries, plus a preview in the shape of a world premiere of Atelier/Masterclass productions prior to their broadcasting by the ARTE network.

During these two extremely busy days, youngsters with a strong interest in film technique and language have the opportunity to present a selection of their projects in the framework of one of the most important international competitions.

Participants can comment on the films at lively sessions open to the public, attended by their teachers, who can also explain the pedagogical principles of their centres.

The Festival applies selection criteria placing this Meeting on a par with its other sections. A specific jury consisting of students from the film school and chaired by a personality from the world of cinema will choose a winner of the Meetings Award. The jury shall award the Panavision Award, comprising 4 weeks rental of a complete camera package Sony Z1 HDV or a voucher worth €10,000 for the rental of any kind of Panavision material for the winning director.

Both the Sales Office and the Video Library open their doors to the works proposed by these schools, in order to give them as many openings as possible.

The 6th International School Meetings will take place on 27th and 28th September 2007 in San Sebastian’s Kutxa Assembly Hall.
