Melanie travels from san Francisco to bodega bay with a parir of caged birds she intends to give to the younger sister of Mitch, a handsome lawyer to whom she's attracted. No sooner has she arrived than a seagull injures her on the forehead, an incident that goes on to repeat itself in different ways. The birds of Bodega Bay seem to have gone crazy and hace started attacking humans.
