Scottie, a one-time police inspector who lost his job because of his fear of heights, is given the task of tailing a beautiful woman, Madeleine, whose behaviour is causing the suspicion that she's going to commit suicide. Despite following her everywhere and even finally failling in love with the woman, Scottie's vertigo nevertheless prevents him from stopping her throwing herself from a church belfry. Some time later, he meets a girl who is Madeleine's double.
