On the last day of World War I, American soldier Hoe Bonham is horribly wounded. He's diagnosed as brain damaged, and has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, nose and mouth. When he recovers conciousness, he realizes all this, and that he can't communicate with anyone. He appeals to Christ and then floats away into a dream world comprised of his memories. A nurse, convinced that his mind is intact, informs him of the coming of Christmas by signing "Merry Christmas" on his chest. She also realizes and informs the doctors that joe is trying to communicate via Morse Code, and this is confirmed by an expert.
