Alicia Hull, widow od a soldier killed in the Great War, is a librarian at the Kenport Public Library and comforts herself with the thought that her work is helping to guide the city's new generations. The authorities ask Alicia to take out of circulation The Communist Dream, a book which they consider subversive. At first Alicia accepts the petition, but later decides that the book's availability reaffirms her country's ideals of liberty.
