Despite being a rich and famous author, Charlie Bubbles is bored. He runs into an old friend, Smokey Pickles, and together they get drunk and paint the town red. They return to Charli'es mansion where he receives a phone call from his ex-wife, Lottie, who reminds him that he promised to take his son Jack to a football game. Charlie asks his secretary, Eliza, to come with him, and on the way allows her to make love to him. At the game he loses his son in the crowd and only finds him again when he returns to Lottie's house in the country. The next day, Charlie cuts the moorings to an observation ballon and rises slowly into the sky.
