A young man who is travelling around the world looking for work arrives one day at a house in the country. The house is owned by a woman witha retarded and mute daugther who lives in a fantasy based on water. The girl's mother subtly proposes that the young man take her daugther away in exchange for money. He marries the girl and takes her to another community. There, however, they live more like father and daugther than husband and wife. Eventually, their relationship is strained by his chronic unemplorment and the dwingling of their financial resources.
