Catherine is a sheltered, shy young woman who lives with her wealthy father, Dr. Sloper. She strives to please him, but Dr. Sloper makes it obvious that he has little regard for his plain daugther. Her only asset is financial: as Dr. Sloper's only child she will receive all his wealth. Morris Townsend, who has dissipated his own funds, sees in Catherine a chance for security. Morris wins her heart but Dr. Sloper spots him for what he is. Catherine will stand against her father.
