A few years back they left austria and Germany as refugees from the Third Reich. Now, in 1945, they are back as American soldiers, they enter Austia as liberators. A country deeply infested by nazism, largely convinced to this day that it was merely Hitler's innocent victim.
It's a film about the bitterness of homecoming, also one of the first films to confront Austrians with their own recent muddled history.
