Hans is a journalist in Zurich. His father, an activist in the Spanish Civil War and still in the resistance movement, dies.
Friends ask hans to take on an assignment originally destined for his father. Then Anne, a young French girl, request him to fin her father, missing since the Civil War. Hans goes to Spain, where he pretends he is covering Franco's imminent death (1975). Hans meets Margarete, whose mother corresponded with his father, and falls in love with her. Yet he encourages anne to come to Madrid. Hans can't decide: Margarete or Anne - past or presente? Franco dies. Anne buries the past and departs. Hans goes with her.
