Antonia and Bernardo are having a love affair which will lead them to marriage. They are both deeply involved in the peasant struggle to achieve better working conditions. The strikes of the spring in 1948 lead them to question the meaning of the "italian way to socialism" and the sense of armed struggle. From 1950, industrial development will draw many peasants to the urban centres, where they will become integrated in a strange world. The film reconstructs real facts.
