Florence, the thirties. Alfred, an englishman who travels to that city in order to write a book about Giotto, meets a boy fond of music and mathematics, with whom starts a great frienship. Alfred leaves for Switzerland, but one days he receives a distressing letter from the boy and returns abruptly to Florence, where he hears the news of his death. Alfred wonders if the death was really an accident...
