Ah Biao’s first feature film Border, in the Official Selection, explores borders as invisible spaces between people. Shot in northern China and Mongolia, the film turns landscapes into extensions of its characters’ thoughts, desires and illusions. After a decade working as a cinematographer, Biao approaches filmmaking without a fixed narrative idea, allowing emotions and relationships to guide the process. Actors are given space to observe, interact and respond to their surroundings, while gestures become part of the film’s language. Colours and objects are similarly connected, creating a whole in which feelings matter more than plot.
