In The Debut, Jesse Eisenberg turns a woman finding her voice into a strange, funny and increasingly unsettling journey. Mona (Julianne Moore), an invisible housewife, discovers community theatre and an unexpected artistic identity. But liberation becomes obsession as she takes her new voice too far. Eisenberg lets the film “lose its mind” with her, creating a heightened, subjective world. The film explores the line between coming alive and going crazy, while questioning the link between art and suffering. As Eisenberg joked in San Sebastián: “My therapist tells me every week, you don’t have to kill yourself to get a good scene.”
