DIEGO LUNA
As part of the Festival’s Agenda 2030 Euskadi Basque Country activities, Diego Luna reflects on cinema as a way of engaging with reality. Drawing on his experience as an actor, director and producer, both in Mexico and internationally, and his connection to Ambulante —an organization he founded in 2005 with Gael García Bernal and Elena Fortes to promote documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation—, he explores what happens when a film moves beyond the screen: the conversations it sparks, the communities it brings together, and its ability to open up new ways of seeing and transforming our surroundings.
She holds a degree in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication, a specialised diploma in Cultural Communication, and a postgraduate qualification in Film Curation from the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola. She has worked in the communications and press departments of international film festivals such as Punto de Vista, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, and the London Spanish Film Festival. For seven years, she was Communications Coordinator at Documental Ambulante A.C., a Mexican organisation that promotes the documentary genre as a tool for change through a travelling film festival, distribution initiatives, training programmes and high-impact campaigns. She has also worked with Vitrine Filmes, Doxa Producciones, Tabakalera – International Centre for Contemporary Culture, the Marketing Department of the ICAA, the Donostia Human Rights Film Festival and Crew United. Her research experience includes an audience study of cinemas in municipalities across Gipuzkoa and research into the First Meeting of Film Schools at the 1960 San Sebastián Film Festival, as part of the Zinemaldi 70: All Possible Stories programme. She is currently Head of the Film Sector at ICEX Spain Export and Investment.
Diego Luna (Toluca, México. 1979) has developed a career as an actor which took off internationally with Y tu mamá también / And Your Mother Too (Alfonso Cuarón, Made in Spanish, 2001). As a director, he debuted with the documentary J.C. Chávez (2007), presented in Tribeca, followed by Abel (2010), premiered at Sundance, screened at the Cannes Séances Spéciales and winner in San Sebastián of the Horizontes and Youth Awards. In 2011 it was screened in the 4+1: Cine mexicano contemporáneo retrospective alongside the omnibus film Revolución (2010), of which he was co-director. In 2014 he presented César Chávez (Perlak) at the Berlinale Special and in 2016 premiered Mr. Pig (2016) at Sundance. He served on the Official Jury in 2013. Cenizas en la boca / Ashes was presented as a special screening in Cannes.
