The Beam in the Other’s Eye: The Critics’ Rebellion Against the Release of Cabezas cortadas
On July 7, 1970, the premiere of Glauber Rocha’s Cabezas cortadas at the San Sebastián Film Festival sparked one of the most turbulent and revealing episodes in the history of film criticism in Spain. An aggressive review in La Vanguardia prompted an unprecedented public response signed by young figures from Spain’s film culture, including Miguel Marías, Fernando Méndez-Leite, Gonzalo Suárez and Emilio Martínez Lázaro. Fifty-six years later, this event offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the critical gaze, accompanied by the presentation of the 4K trailer for the film’s recent restoration by FlixOlé and Video Mercury Films, a screening of exclusive testimonies from those who took part in that protest, and a panel discussion with Javier Mosqueda (restorer) and Miguel López (Video Mercury Films/FlixOlé).
Miguel López holds a degree in Journalism from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He has a Master’s degree in Screenwriting for Films and TV Series from Rey Juan Carlos University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Executive Production from ECAM and a Master’s degree in Film Preservation and Restoration from ECAM. Since 2018, he has been associated with the companies FlixOlé and Video Mercury Films, where he currently serves as Head of Programming and Marketing.
Javier Mosqueda Orellana holds a Bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Communication and a Master’s degree in Film Heritage Management from the Complutense University of Madrid. He began his professional career as a photographer and continued his technical training as a colourist, carrying out colour grading for a large number of films. He specialises in the field of film restoration and film laboratories, having collaborated on preservation projects for various film libraries and audiovisual archives internationally. He currently coordinates the Archive Department at ECAM and is the academic director of the Master’s degree in Film Restoration and Preservation at the school.
Aarón Ortega holds a degree in Journalism from Rey Juan Carlos University. Over the course of his 15-year career, he has worked as a reporter and editor-in-chief in the press, on the radio and on television. A reporter and cultural correspondent specialising in film and music, he has also combined these roles with that of corporate adviser to local authorities. Currently Head of Communications, he coordinates the Chair of Spanish Cinema at Rey Juan Carlos University.
