Today Movistar Plus and the San Sebastián Festival renewed their collaboration agreement for the next three years (2027-2029), consolidating a strategic partnership under which the platform remains one of the event’s major partners while reconfirming the commitment of both bodies to promote the cinema, series and audiovisual creation.
The agreement was signed in San Sebastián’s Victoria Eugenia Theatre, with the participation of Alfonso Gómez Palacio, CEO of Movistar Plus; José Luis Rebordinos, Director of the San Sebastián Festival, and Maialen Beloki, Deputy Director of the Festival and its director-to-be from January.
This renewal of Movistar Plus as Media Partner furthers a collaboration which, since 2013, has helped to make the San Sebastián Festival one of the major meeting hubs for the European and Latin-American audiovisual industry, as well as a key space for discovering talent, creative dialogue and promoting new works.
Movistar Plus has close ties to the Festival, a privileged stage for accompanying creators, producers, screenwriters, actors and professionals from the sector, as well as for presenting some of its most important audiovisual projects. The platform considers the Festival to be an essential event for bolstering its relationship with the industry and for continuing to promote Spanish talent and creation. This year, Movistar Plus has presented the Original films 5 minutos más / 5 More Minutes (Official Selection), La bola negra / The Black Ball (Perlak) and El ser querido / The Beloved (Made in Spain), the series El castillo / The Castle (Official Selection out of competition) and the documentary El otro Chiquito (Made in Spain).
For its part, the San Sebastián Festival continues to play a fundamental role as a showcase for international talent, a platform for launching new projects, and a meeting hub for audiovisual industry professionals.
Over the last decade the Festival has provided the stage for the premieres of some of the platform’s most successful Originals productions. In 2017, for example, Movistar Plus presented the out-of-competition screening of La peste / The Plague, the first of its Originals series to be included in the Festival’s Official Selection, followed by Gigantes (2018), Antidisturbios / Riot Police (2020), La Fortuna (2021), Apagón / Offworld (2022), La Mesías (2023), Querer (2024) and Anatomía de un instante / The Anatomy of a Moment (2025).
Among the most outstanding Movistar Plus Originals to have shown in the Official Selection in recent years are Alejandro Amenábar’s Mientras dure la guerra / While at War (2019); Modelo 77 (2022) and Los tigres (2025) by Alberto Rodríguez; Flores para Antonio / Flowers for Antonio (2025), by Elena Molina and Isaki Lacuesta, and Los domingos / Sundays (2025), by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, winner of the Golden Shell.
Other sections too have premiered Movistar Plus Originals such as Raphaelismo (Gala Movistar, 2021), Las huellas de elBulli (Culinary Zinema, 2021), Mugaritz, sin pan ni postre (Culinary Zinema, 2024) and Hasta que me quede sin voz (Velodrome, 2025), as well as series like Vergüenza (Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, 2017), Arde Madrid (Velodrome, 2018), Vida perfecta (Velodrome, 2019), Dime quién soy (Movistar Gala, 2020), Fácil (Movistar Gala, 2022), El otro lado (Velodrome, 2023), Esta ambición desmedida (Velodrome, 2023) and Celeste (Velodrome, 2024).
With this renewal, the bodies confirm their desire to continue pooling forces in order to support creativity, foster new opportunities for creators and contribute to the development of a stronger, more diverse and competitive audiovisual industry.
