Little girls Satsuki and Mei move to a ramshackle house in the country with their father whilst their mother recovers from an illness in a nearby hospital. To their surprise, they soon discover that they are sharing the house with some rather unusual creatures and with very strange neighbours, including Totoro, a spirit of the forest. When the going gets rough, their new friends will help them to rediscover hope.
